The benefits of breastfeeding are widely acknowledged. The government should rein in formula companies and even well-meaning hospitals that nudge new moms toward formula. By now, the overwhelming benefit of breastfeeding babies to improve their health, and sometimes to save their lives, is universally acknowledged, even by the companies that produce formula.

The World Health Organization (WHO) released a new international growth standard statistical distribution in 2006, which describes the growth of children ages 0 to 59 months living in environments believed to support what WHO researchers view as optimal growth of children in six countries throughout the world, including the U.S. The distribution shows how infants and young children grow under these conditions, rather than how they do grow in environments that may not support optimal growth.

Maryland Pediatrician of the Year is MBC Board Director Dr. Edward Bartlett

Edward Bartlett, MD, FAAP, and Health Care Professional Representative to the MBC Board of Directors was honored by the Maryland Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics with the 2010 Pediatrician of the Year Award. This award honors a pediatrician whose career has exemplified the ideals of pediatrics in service, advocacy and contribution to organized pediatrics in Maryland. In his acceptance speech Dr. Bartlett spoke of providing breastfeeding education to the pediatric community as well as about the Business Case for Breastfeeding program.
The Maryland Breastfeeding Coalition would like to congratulate Dr. Bartlett and to thank him for his dedication to Promoting, Protecting and Supporting Breastfeeding in the State of Maryland.
